Body found in Santa Fe River

SANTA FE – A man’s body was retrieved from the Santa Fe River by fire and rescue personnel Friday morning.

Capt. Anthony Tapia of the Santa Fe Police Department said that about 10:30 a.m. a caller reported seeing a body in the water under the DeFouri Bridge that connects with West Alameda Street in the city’s downtown area.

Police and rescue personnel located the body but as they were beginning to retrieve it, “the current caught it and took it a little distance down the river,” Tapia said, but rescue personnel were eventually able to pull the body from the water. Investigators were in the process of trying to identify the deceased individual later Friday.

Tapia said there were no immediate signs of foul play, and that the body may be of a homeless man.

Homeless people are known to camp along the river bank. There was rainfall in Santa Fe overnight that could have increased river flows.

On Wednesday night, a pedestrian was killed when struck by a vehicle at Cerrillos Road and Richards Avenue. Police have identified the man, who had Colorado identification, but have not identified next of kin.

Police can’t say if that man was believed to have been homeless, a spokesman said.
