Bowl season to open Dec. 20; NM Bowl kicks off next day

The New Mexico Bowl once could lay claim to being the opener to the college football bowl season. Then at least it was on the first day.

Then came Thursday’s announcement that the coming bowl season will begin on Friday, Dec. 20 with the Bahamas Bowl and the Frisco Bowl. The New Mexico Bowl, formatted to pit a Mountain West team against one from Conference USA, is one of six minor bowls to air the next day.

The New Mexico Bowl is one of 15 games owned and operated by ESPN Events. ESPN released Thursday a schedule for 35 bowl games to appear on its networks in December and January. Of note is that the College Football Playoff semifinals will take place Saturday, Dec. 28, the championshp game is set for Jan. 13, and at least 15 games will take place in between.
