Aggies defeated at WAC tournament

MESA, Ariz. — David Avitia’s two-run double highlighted a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning as fourth-seeded Grand Canyon defeated top seed New Mexico State 8-3 late Friday at the Western Athletic Conference baseball tournament.

NMSU (38-16) grabbed a 3-2 lead on Joey Ortiz’s RBI single in the top of the seventh, but the Antelopes (36-22) answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame and scored two more in the eighth.

GCU advanced to the championship round, while the Aggies dropped into the losers’ bracket and will face No. 3 Sacramento State today at 3 p.m. The winner faces Grand Canyon at 7 p.m. and will need to defeat the ‘Lopes twice to win the double-elimination tournament. The “if” game is Sunday at 1 p.m.
