Two Uber passengers killed in crash

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Two passengers in a ride-sharing vehicle were killed and their driver injured when another driver suspected of DWI plowed into them at Alameda and the Pan American Freeway late Friday, according to the Albuquerque Police Department.

APD spokesman Simon Drobik did not release the names of the victims Saturday. He said their families had been notified. He said the Uber driver is in the hospital and is expected to survive but didn’t give his condition.

Police are not naming the man who crashed into the Uber vehicle, pending a blood draw and possible charges against him. Drobik said the man “showed signs of impairment.”

“DWI is a factor in this investigation,” he said.

Drobik said the Uber driver, in a Ford Fusion, was headed east on Alameda around 11:30 p.m. when he made a left turn onto the northbound Pan American frontage road along Interstate 25 and was struck by a Kia sedan going west at high speed on Alameda.

The two passengers in the Uber car’s backseat were killed and their driver was injured.

The westbound driver was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition.

Drobik said APD’s DWI and traffic police are investigating the crash.
