Two dead in motorcycle crash near Red River

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — State police say two people are dead after a head-on motorcycle crash near Red River on Saturday.

Lt. Mark Soriano said in a news release Sunday evening that Lorenzo Cortez, 58, and his passenger Jennifer Lynn Ashley, 43, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Cortez and Ashley were headed west on N.M. 38 around 6 p.m. Saturday when their motorcycle crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with another motorcycle. Two other motorcycles were involved in the wreck, and four people were airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in critical condition.

Soriano said alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.

Motorcyclists flock to Red River each year for an annual Memorial Day weekend rally, which began Thursday and wraps up on Monday.
