Week in Review: A look back at the top sports stories in northern New Mexico


Los Alamos High School athletes will soon have a new home at Sullivan Field as the Los Alamos School board recently gave the thumbs up to a $5 million fieldhouse to replace the existing one.


Santa Fe High soccer player Matt Hunter, who scored 31 goals last season, will play at Sewanee: University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn.

West Las Vegas runner Isaiah Mikah Paiz has signed at Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. He was Class 3A the 800-meter state champion this year and was seventh in cross country in the fall.

EspaƱola Valley’s Meranda Romero has signed to play at New Mexico Highlands. She had a 424 digs and returned 522 serves with just 34 errors.



Take life to a higher level with the Santa Fe Public School pole vault camp that runs Friday through June 12. The camp includes fundamental instruction, drills and training techniques. Camp will be held at the Santa Fe High school track. Registration is Friday at 4:45.


Santa Fe mountaineer Richard Cost will discuss his ill-fated attempt to climb Mount Everest this spring at the Santa Fe REI store on June 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. Cost was just below Camp 2 on the world’s highest peak when stricken with acute mountain sickness and cerebral edema. Registration for the free event is recommended.


Boys and girls age 6-15 can sharpen their skills June 10-14 at the Northern New Mexico College camp. Youngsters 6-9 go from nine a.m. to noon and the older players from 1-5 p.m. For more information call men’s basketball coach Ryan Cordova at 747-2288.
