NMSP: Bernalillo Police kill armed man at apartments

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bernalillo Police Department officers fatally shot an armed man Wednesday after responding to a report of gunshots at an apartment complex, according to New Mexico State Police.

Fabian Rivera, 28, was identified by State Police as the person killed.

According to State Police, which is investigating the officer-involved shooting, around 9:30 a.m. Town of Bernalillo police officers were dispatched to a “shots fired call” at the Villa Elena Apartments in the 200 block of Villa Elena Lane and encountered Rivera, who was armed with a gun.

“During the encounter two Bernalillo Police Department officers discharged their weapons striking the suspect,” according to a State Police news release. “Rivera was transported to an area trauma center where he was later pronounced deceased at around 1:30 p.m.”

State Police said no officers were injured.

The shooting remains under investigation, State Police said, adding that the identities of the officers involved will not be released until they are interviewed.
