NMSP release statement about Bernalillo shooting


BERNALILLO – The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating a police shooting that took place in the Town of Bernalillo at 9:30 Wednesday morning, according to a press release.

The incident began when officers from the Bernalillo Police Department were dispatched to a shots-fired call at apartment 3 of the Villa Elena Apartments, 201 Villa Elena Lane, the press release stated

The same release indicated that after officers arrived on scene, they encountered Fabian Rivera, 28, of Bernalillo, armed with a gun.

During the encounter, two BPD officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect.

The release states that Rivera was transported to an area trauma center, where he was later pronounced deceased at around 1:30 p.m.

NMSP Public Information Officer Ray Wilson said in an email that this investigation is in preliminary stages, including the details about what led up to the shooting.

Furthermore, the release states that the identities of the officers involved will not be released until their interviews are conducted.
