University of New Mexico right-hander Justin Slaten has signed with the Texas Rangers, the club announced Wednesday. MLB.com reports that Slaten, a third-round pick in last week’s draft, agreed to a $575,000 signing bonus. The slot value for the pick (86th overall) was $699,700.

Tweeted MLB.com’s Jim Callis: “New Mexico RHP, solid fastball/slider combo, struck out No. 1 overall pick Adley Rutschman twice in two AB in first start of year, starred in Northwoods Lg last summer. @MLBDraft”

Slaten, of Longview, Texas, went 5-5 with a 2.51 ERA (23 ER/82.1 IP), 98 strikeouts and 36 walks over 13 starts this season as a junior for the Lobos.

Callis’ reference was to Slaten’s work against then-defending national champion Oregon State and Rutschman in the season opener, a 6-5 Lobos loss in Surprise, Ariz.
