ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Evening to benefit Anita Salas Fund

Cancer survivor Maggi Meadows Blackburn is organizing a fundraiser for the Anita Salas Memorial Fund, which helps New Mexico women pay for breast or cervical cancer treatment and related bills.

“A Luv N Life Celebration” will be 6 p.m.-midnight Friday at the Hotel Albuquerque, 800 Rio Grande NW. A $10 donation at the door includes one door-prize ticket, food and an evening of classic rock, jazz and blues by Electric Edric, Marshall Nelson, Rudy Boy Experiment and others. There will also be a raffle with items including a hotel stay, art and jewelry by local artists.

Free flu shots offered Saturday

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center will offer free flu shots from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the UNM Northeast Heights Clinic, 7801 Academy NE. The seasonal flu vaccines are free to anyone age 18 and older.

Family retreat for cancer patients

Cancer Services of New Mexico will sponsor a Fall 2012 Family Cancer Retreat from Nov. 2-4 at the Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown hotel, 2600 Louisiana NE.

The free program for adult cancer patients, survivors and their families will feature educational sessions on a variety of topics, including treatments and clinical trials, genetic testing, talking to kids about cancer, pain management and hospice and insurance.
