Week in Review: A look back at the top sports stories in northern NM

HONORED

Taos graduate Jonah Vigil was named the Gatorade New Mexico male track and field athlete of the year. Vigil swept the Class 4A 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes at the state track meet in May, as well as winning the long jump. And he set an all-classes record in the 400 in 47.01 seconds in 2018.

HIRED

EspaƱola Valley has hired former Northern New Mexico College assistant basketball coach and player Gabriel Martinez as its new boys basketball coach. Martinez also was an assistant for two seasons with Sandia High School in Albuquerque.

VOLLEYBALL: Learn how to dig, pass, spike and other fundamentals with New Mexico Highlands coaches at camps Monday and Tuesday and July 8-9 at Mesa Vista High School. The camp is for middle school and high school players. For more information call 927-6914 or 927-3083.

SOCCER: St. Michael’s alums who played soccer are invited to challenge this year’s squad in the annual alumni boys and girls games Aug. 3. Those interested in playing should contact coach Mike Feldewert at 570-1360.
