State Police: 5 dead in truck crash near Jal

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico State Police reported five people were killed in a crash near Jal involving a crew cab pickup truck and a semi-tractor trailer Thursday morning.

According to a State Police news release, the crash happened around 7 a.m. on N.M. 128 near mile post 57, just east of Jal, which is in New Mexico's far southeast corner. All four people in the pickup truck were killed and the sole driver of the semi was also killed, according to State Police officer Ray Wilson.

“We do not yet have identities on the deceased,” he said. “There are no other vehicles or victims involved.”

The State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit was processing the scene and working with the Office of the Medical Investigator around 5:30 p.m., more than 10 hours after the incident.

The crash and subsequent investigation closed N.M. 128 in both directions from mile posts 55 to 59. Eastbound traffic was diverted onto Willis Road; and westbound traffic onto Dollar Hide Road.
