‘In the moment’: Dave Attell calls his show ‘a one-of-a-kind experience’

Dave Attell has performed his comedy at Santa Ana Star Casino.

When he arrives on Santa Ana Pueblo to perform his four shows, he’s looking for some good luck.

“This time, I’m hoping to double my win at the blackjack table,” he says with a laugh. “Being serious, I had a great time the last time I was out there.”

Attell will perform two shows – at 7 and 9:30 – tonight and Saturday, July 20, at The Stage at Santa Ana Star.

The comedian has recently been on tour with fellow comedian Jeff Ross as part of the “Bumping Mics” tour, which will air on Netflix as a three-part comedy event on Nov. 27.

Attell says Ross pushed him to do the “Bumping Mics” tour.

“Jeff was the one who branded it,” he says. “These were straight-up corny jokes told by two old guys.”

Attell is best-known as the host of Comedy Central’s “Insomniac With Dave Attell,” which helped earn him a cult following.

The Queens, N.Y., native has built quite a career for himself in comedy and in TV and film.

“I’m not an actor, in any sense,” he says. “But if a project comes along that really grabs my interest, I will take a look at it.”

Attell has been in the business for some time, and he’s developed his way of coming up with new material.

He’ll admit – it’s getting more difficult.

“Instagram. I know that is the next media for comedy,” he says. “Going to a club is debatable. People don’t like to turn off their phone. The comedy show that I perform at clubs is really a one-of-a-kind experience. You get to give up the tech for a few hours and just live in the moment.”

Attell is also very cognizant of not repeating himself with material.

“That’s also the tough part,” he says. “This is the reason I’m always working on some new bits. The cool thing about playing the club and casino circuit is that I can try out the new stuff.”

As technology continues to take over a big part of our lives, Attell goes old school when writing his material down.

“I do like it on paper,” he says. “It’s important for me to be able to just throw it out if it’s not working.”
