An Albuquerque police officer shot and injured a man beside a busy intersection in Northeast Albuquerque on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputy Chief Harold Medina, with the Albuquerque Police Department, said the man was taken to a hospital and is being treated for at least one gunshot wound.

Medina said police responded to reports of a man driving erratically and waving a gun out of the window near San Mateo and Lomas around 4 p.m.

He said an altercation ensued when an officer caught up with the man and “at least one shot was fired” by the officer.

Medina didn’t say if the man fired at police, if he had a gun at the time of the shooting or give any other details.

But Jacob Brundige told the Journal he saw the whole thing.

Brundige said he was driving home from the bank with his 5-year-old son when they noticed a car driving toward them in the wrong lanes of traffic on Lomas.

He said the car sideswiped two other vehicles and almost hit them head-on before stopping on the opposite side of Lomas.

“Then he jumped out of his car, jumped on top of his car, with his gun in his hand and he was yelling,” Brundige said. “There was already an officer there and the officer had his gun pointed at him asking him to drop his gun and get off the car.”

He said the man continued waving the gun around in an aggressive manner and the officer opened fire.

A video taken by Brundige after the shooting captures a man slumped over the roof of a black Subaru hatchback as an officer in plainclothes, with an identifying vest on, can be seen circling the vehicle.

The incident shut down Lomas in both directions, between San Mateo and La Veta, with police vehicles and crime scene tape as officers investigated long into the night.
