An armed man was shot and killed by a Hobbs Police Department officer at a gas station Thursday morning, according to New Mexico State Police.
State Police spokesman Ray Wilson said Roberto Mata of Carlsbad was pronounced dead at the scene, and no officers were injured. He did not identify the officer who shot 46-year-old Mata.
He said Hobbs police responded to the Allsup’s convenience store at 321 Dal Paso around 11:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a man with a gun. Arriving officers found Mata armed with a gun. “During the encounter shots were fired by Mata and an HPD officer,” State Police said.
Wilson gave no other details and said the investigation is ongoing.
