SAN ANTONIO, Texas — New Mexico United laid a goose egg Saturday night, losing 5-0 to San Antonio FC. It’s the most decisive defeat in United Soccer League Championship play for the first-year franchise.
United fell to 8-7-10, and the one-time Western Conference leader is now tied for seventh.
Before an announced turnout of 6,057 at Toyota Field, Cristian Parano had the bookend goals for San Antonio (9-9-7), scoring first in the 28th minute and the finale for good measure in the 90th minute.
Parano also had two assists in the most lopsided win in San Antonio club history.
New Mexico played a man down from the 21st minute on, when Saalih Muhammad drew a record card for a “foul and abusive language, and trailed 2-0 at the half.
The hosts peppered United goalkeeper Cody Mizell with eight shots on goal. New Mexico had only two on target.
United returns to action Sept. 1 at home vs. Orange County SC.
