ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 9-year-old girl was injured when a man walking through a Southeast Albuquerque apartment complex accidentally shot a round into the sidewalk and it ricocheted into her, according to police.

She was in good condition Thursday.

Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department, said around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday a man called 911 to say his daughter had been shot and he was taking her to the hospital. Officers were sent to the complex on the 3400 block of Ross SE, near the Puerto Del Sol golf course, to investigate.

“The father of the girl told police an unknown male was walking through the apartment complex and pulled out a handgun,” Gallegos wrote in an email. “He said the gun malfunctioned, causing it to discharge into the concrete. One round ricocheted and struck the girl, according to the father.”

He said detectives are following up with the father to try to identify the man who fired the gun.
