Pearce: No endorsement in House race

SANTA FE — Steve Pearce, chairman of the state Republican Party and a former congressman, said Friday that he isn’t endorsing anyone in the GOP primary to fill the House seat he once held.

In a written message to Republican voters, Pearce said it’s against party rules for him to endorse a candidate while serving as chairman. Furthermore, he said, he has a personal practice of refraining from endorsements in contested primaries.

Pearce said he’s received a number of telephone calls inquiring about whom he will support.

Seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Rep. Xochitl Torres Small in the 2nd Congressional District are Claire Chase, government relations director for Mack Energy; former state Rep. Yvette Herrell; and businessman Chris Mathys.
