It was another deadly night across Albuquerque as three people were killed in separate shootings late Friday.

The shootings occurred just eight days after five people were fatally shot and six others wounded in three separate incidents across Albuquerque on Sept. 12.

The latest round of shootings began just before 8 p.m. on Friday near the University of New Mexico campus. That shooting left one man dead.

Then at about 10:30 p.m. Albuquerque police responded to a report of an accidental shooting on the 10800 block of Cenote SW, near 118th and Dennis Chavez. At the scene they discovered a deceased male with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

About an hour later, police were dispatched to the Arioso Apartments in Northeast Albuquerque and found another deceased male who appeared to have been shot.

Homicide callouts were initiated at each of the scenes.

UNM area shooting

The UNM area shooting occurred near Central and Yale. The Albuquerque Police Department received a call just before 8 p.m. reporting that a male had been shot in a parking lot. Witnesses also reported two people running from the area.

“Officers arrived and discovered the individual who unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on scene,” APD spokesman Daren DeAguero said in a news release. Gilbert Gallegos, another APD spokesman, later said the victim had been shot in the chest.

Central between Yale and Harvard was closed in both directions while investigators processed the scene.

Witnesses told the Journal they heard one male harassing a female outside a restaurant and saw another person walk over to confront the harasser.

The body could be seen from across the street for more than an hour before the Office of the Medical Investigator arrived and set up a tent, blocking it from view.

An ambulance, several law-enforcement vehicles and two mobile crime scene units crowded the street while officers appeared to talk to a man in the back of a police cruiser.

A Lobo alert issued by UNM Police hit cellphones just after 9 p.m. saying APD was investigating a shooting, and a male in an orange shirt and black pants had run south from a McDonald’s on Yale.

Police have not identified any suspects in that shooting.

Cenote SW shooting

Officers were dispatched to the 10800 block of Cenote SW around 10:30 p.m. after a 911 caller reported the person — described only as “a male subject” by police — was accidentally shot by his friend, APD said. The caller reported that that several people were drinking and her brother accidentally shot a friend. She also reported that her brother had fled the scene.

“Officers arrived and discovered one male subject in a room of the residence with an apparent gunshot wound to the head,” Gallegos said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gallegos said several people have been detained. APD has not publicly identified the suspect in that case.

Arioso Apartments shooting

At 11:35 p.m. officers in APD’s Northeast Area Command were dispatched to the Arioso Apartments, near Montgomery and Pennsylvania, for another shooting.

“Original dispatch indicated that the caller’s boyfriend had been shot,” Sgt. Tanner Tixier, an APD spokesman said. “When officers arrived on scene they located a male … who appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound and subsequently died as a result of his injuries.”

Tixier said detectives were in the initial stages of their investigation. He also noted that no information was available on the shooter.

“At this time, detectives are conducting interviews and following up on active leads,” Gallegos said in a Saturday morning update.
