The first Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta event, ABQ Aloft, was rained out Friday morning.
Because of heavy rain across the Albuquerque area, balloon crews and their pilots did not inflate or launch from local schools.
“We’ll miss the smiling students, families & educators that we usually see on the eve of Opening Day,” the fiesta announced on twitter just before 6:30 a.m.
Pilots have been tethering and taking off from area schools since 2005, and more than 90 schools were registered to participate this year.
Dawn Patrol begins at 6 a.m. Saturday and the first mass ascension kicks off the fiesta at 7 a.m., weather permitting.
