ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Someone in a passing vehicle opened fire on a State Police officer who was conducting a traffic stop in Northeast Albuquerque Friday night, according to New Mexico State Police.

State Police spokesman Mark Soriano said nobody was injured in the shooting and no suspects are in custody.

He said gunfire rang out around 9:20 p.m., near Pennsylvania and Chico NE, when someone fired multiple shots toward the officer from a vehicle.

“Officers canvassed the neighborhood looking for innocent bystanders who may have been injured by the gunfire, fortunately no one was injured,” Soriano said. “The investigations is in the preliminary stages.”

Several State Police vehicles surrounded the intersection of Chico and Pennsylvania NE as officers spoke with neighbors who came outside after the commotion.

A woman said her son was speaking with a State Police officer outside their apartment when someone drove by in a car and fired at least six shots at them before driving off.
