Rio Rancho Fire Rescue spokeswoman Jessica Duron-Martinez said local fire crews were dispatched to the Club Rio Rancho country club at almost 8 o’clock due to a structure fire.
“We received reports of smoke and flames coming from the area of the former Chamisa Hills country club and Country Club (Road) we weren’t sure is it was residential until we got on scene,” Duron-Martinez said. “As soon as we got here and we got ready to use the hydrants we had collapse.”
Duron-Martinez said that RRFR had to go defensive and deploy ladder trucks to fight the fire from the exterior and were not able to go inside the structure for firefighter safety.
By midnight, Duron-Martinez said that fire crew had been working the fire for four hours.
Duron-Martinez said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire because crews are not able to go into the structure.
The state fire marshal’s office is on scene to assist with the investigation, which will not be done until the fire is extinguished.
Josh Skarsgard, owner of Land Development 2, LLC the company that currently owns the golf course property said he is saddened to learn of the fire at the club house located off of Country Club Road.
“We are hopeful and prayerful that nobody was injured in the blaze,” Skarsgard said. “We are very appreciative of the bravery and skill demonstrated by the Rio Rancho Fire Department in putting out the blaze. While we don’t know how this fire started we remain committed to rehabilitating this property in the future.”
