Sports Speak Up!

BEFORE THE SEASON began, Lobo football coach Bob Davie said that he would be comfortable with any of his four quarterbacks as the starter. If that’s a valid statement then after what we’ve seen the past two games, shouldn’t Trae

Hall get a shot at the position? For this Friday’s nationally televised game with Colorado State, it’s difficult to say which fan base is more disappointed. New Mexico looks hapless yet Colorado State with their new $225 million stadium and $37.7 million naming rights deal has a worse record at 1-5 than do the Lobos.

(TUESDAY’S JOURNAL) headline “Quarterback shuffle resumes” would make more sense if it read “coaching shuffle begins.”

MY FRIEND WHO was only 47 and a huge Lobo fan passed away last Saturday. We were talking about, rain or shine, win or lose meeting at the tailgate for UNM v CSU. Shame on those people who think that the Lobos owe them a win before they will attend a game. We support the team and my family will be there til we pass too.

WITH BIG BEN and Mason Rudolph both sidelined and Landry Jones traded away, the Steelers should convert Zach Gentry back to QB where he belongs.

THE 2017 NFL draft’s first round is looking better and better. The KC Chiefs snagged Patrick Mahomes, the Houston Texans corralled DeShaun Watson, the Jacksonville Jaguars acquired Leonard Fournette, the Chicago Bears signed Mitchell Trubisky and, best of all, the Carolina Panthers used their No. 8 pick to land Stanford’s all-purpose running back, Christian McCaffrey, which I wrote at the time was the “steal” of the first round. Mahomes has become a super-star, the others have played extremely well at times, while McCaffrey, as I suspected he would, has developed into a genuine MVP candidate in only his (third) year.

WILL CONGRESS disrupt the NFL season by issuing subpoenas to all the NFL referees that have been identified as whistle blowers?
