Sports Speak Up! Readers exasperated with faltering Lobo football

CLEARLY, THE LOBOS will never progress to a competitive level with Coach Davie. Why not start the search for his replacement now?

— Decidedly Dave

IN LIGHT OF THE recent article breaking down attendance and ticket revenue for sports, I was surprised that Steve Virgen’s coverage of last night’s Hobo game didn’t include “the announced attendance was .… or even have it in the box score. However, based on the background of Roberto E. Rosale’s photo, it looked pretty sparse! Perhaps it’s time for Coach Davie to retire, based on his recent health concerns and the team’s record. We wouldn’t want him to get called for a 5 am ‘Gruden’ meeting from the University!

— Doug Priestap

Steve didn’t know at the time he had to file a story. The announced attendance (tickets out, typically) was 15,393. — Randy, Journal

WHAT ANOTHER absolutely pathetic performance by the Lobo football team on national TV. Part of the slogan in the UNM locker room is “out-discipline.” Somebody, anybody, please take those words off the wall. This UNM team probably won’t win another game this season. The only sustained hope for this program was coach Rocky Long. That wishful thinking was extinguished in December, 2008, when UNM officials announced a “mutual termination.”

— Retro Lobo

SEASON OVER, turn off the lights. The fast lady is singing and Lobo football is fading. When you get whipped at home by a 1-5 team the message is clear. Look for yet another 3-9 season and more excuses from the coach. He lost many of us with his handling of the flag incident and it’s evident that his coaching days are done. The “Old Glory” curse continues. Got to feel sorry for the players who are trying their best. We sacrificed a nationally recognized soccer team to allow this debacle to continue.

— Dave C

I assume Dave meant “fat” lady. But if she’s fast, the Lobos should recruit her. — Randy, Journal

FRIDAY’S 2-HOUR 1st half (of the Lobos game) only confirmed my opinion that giving the remainder of my season tickets to a youth organization would be child abuse. Play should be allowed to continue during TV delays particularly during Group of 5 games since they receive so little of that money compared to Power 5 schools.

— Davario

LISTENING TO that radio guy, Portnoy, broadcast a Lobo game is like listening to Marv Albert on steroids.

— MarkSD

SO LOBO RUNNING BACK Carroll hot dogs it into the end zone without the football, dropping it untouched at the two. His lack of discipline even made the College Gameday segment “just do your job”. Here’s a thought, try winning the game before going off on those inane celebrations.

— Allan, ABQ, father of an attorney

BOB DAVIE JUST demonstrated on national TV why he has no business coaching a Division I football team. … The TV commentators roasted Davie’s inept call of a timeout with less than 2 minutes left before halftime. That egregious error, along with several unforced penalties, (led) to an unnecessary TD by CSU. f Davie were a professor at UNM and his students made as many mistakes (penalties) as Davie’s players do, the prof would be fired. President Garnett, do your duty!

— Disgusted, Depressed and Done with Davie

WHAT AN EMBARRASSMENT! Hot shot players that can’t wait to celebrate until they get into the end zone! I know there are injuries, but a backfield that can’t defend against the long pass! They can only stop it if they interfere and get called for a penalty! Maybe, the offense should play defense and vice versa! Where are the coaches that are supposed to make adjustments, especially during halftime! They wonder why no fans show up! Take a look at what is on the field! Maybe 2-10 this year, if nothing improves!

— A Disgruntled Fan

I’M NOT GOING to any more Lobo football games. I’m not going to watch any more Lobo football games. I’m not going to listen to any more Lobo football games. That way, I will be able to regrow my hair.

— Corrales Guy

I’ve tried that tack. Doesn’t work. — Randy, Journal
