TULSA, Okla. — Janu Silva of the host Tulsa Roughnecks scored six minutes into second-half stoppage time to deal New Mexico United a devastating 2-1 defeat Saturday night in United Soccer League Championship division play.
With the loss, United (10-10-12) slipped to 11th position in the USLC’s Western Conference with 42 points. The top 10 teams in the West advance to the postseason, and 10th-place San Antonio (12-13-8) has 44 points. The good news for United is that the next two teams above them in the West (LA Galaxy II, 45 points) and the one below (Las Vegas Lights, FC) have only one match left. United has two, both at home (Wednesday vs. Tacoma, next Saturday vs. Las Vegas).
United’s lone goal came from Albuquerque product Devon Sandoval in the 68th minute, a point-blank shot off a feed from Santi Moar. Tulsa opened the scoring off a set piece in the 10th minute, and Silva’s winner came three minutes before the final whistle.
