Eleanor Valencia, 53, died in the crash that happened just after 9 a.m. on N.M. 63 in Pecos, New Mexico State Police said in a news release.

According to State Police, a truck driven by Macario Garcia-Lopez, 50, also of Pecos, was going south on N.M. 63 when — for reasons still under investigation — the vehicle left the road and overturned, landing on its roof.

Valencia, who was a passenger, was ejected and killed.

Garcia-Lopez sustained minor injuries and was treated by medical personnel at the scene.

“Alcohol does appear to be a factor and seat belts do not appear to have been properly utilized,” State Police said.

Garcia-Lopez was booked into the San Miguel County jail for: homicide by vehicle; driving under the influence (seventh or subsequent offense); tampering with evidence; careless driving; and not having a license.

The State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit was called to assist with the investigation.
