Albuquerque will continue its free pet microchipping next week at its Eastside and Westside shelters.

The service is available from Nov. 12-17 between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

bright spotThe Animal Welfare Department has offered the service on a monthly basis since this summer and so far chipped more than 3,000 pets, according to spokeswoman Desiree Cawley.

“It’s been a great response from the public, and I’m so happy that they want to be great responsible pet owners,” she said.

The city typically charges $15 for a pet microchip.

To participate, owners must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. The pet’s microchip will be registered to the ID holder, according to the city.

Owners will have to fill out paperwork to register the microchip, providing the information that would be used to find the animal if it is ever lost or recovered.

The Eastside Shelter is at 8920 Lomas NE; the Westside Shelter at 11800 Sunset Gardens SW.
