ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Detectives are looking for a man they say is connected to an October slaying and escaped New Mexico State Police days later, according to the Albuquerque Police Department.
Gilbert Gallegos, an APD spokesman, said the man is wanted in connection with the Oct. 23 killing of 44-year-old Nathan Salcido.
Officers were responding to a shooting when they found Salcido behind the Big Lots store near Zuni and San Mateo SE around 6:15 a.m. He had been shot in the chest and died at the hospital soon after.
Gallegos said a stolen black Hyundai Tucson was captured on video during the killing, and the owner called police after seeing it in a news story.
State Police spokesman Mark Soriano said an officer tried to stop the SUV on Oct. 28 and it sped off. The vehicle crashed into a building at Copper and Louisiana, and two people fled.
Gallegos said one of the suspects was handcuffed, but escaped using a handcuff key the suspect had concealed. Soriano couldn’t confirm that detail, but said neither suspect is in custody.
Gallegos said homicide detectives are now looking for the man who escaped.
