ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Detectives believe the shooting that killed a 17-year-old Tuesday night on the West Side was an accident, according to the Albuquerque Police Department.

Gilbert Gallegos, an APD spokesman, identified the person who died as Isaiah Martinez.

“While this investigation is in the preliminary stage, early indication appears consistent with an accidental shooting,” he said.

Gallegos did not say if police believe Martinez accidentally shot himself or if he was shot by someone else. He said accidental shootings have increased dramatically, from 10 in 2018 to 32 so far this year. Gallegos did not know how many of those were fatal.

Police responded to the incident around 8 p.m. in the 6600 block of Meadow Lake NW, between Unser and Golf Course.

Arriving officers found Martinez shot inside the home. He died at a hospital.

Monica Armenta, an Albuquerque Public Schools spokeswoman, said Martinez attended Cibola High School. She said counselors visited with Martinez’s classmates following the tragedy to offer them assistance. The school also posted “Loss and Grief Support Resources” to its website Wednesday, offering counseling, staff assistance and other resources to those affected.
