Rep. Gonzales is Rio Arriba nominee for Sen. Cisneros’ seat

SANTA FE – During a special meeting on Thursday, the Rio Arriba County Commission picked state Rep. Roberto “Bobby” Gonzales as its nominee to fill the state Senate seat of the late Sen. Carlos Cisneros, a Democrat from Questa who died in September.

The Taos County Commission previously made Gonzales its choice, while governing boards in Los Alamos and Santa Fe counties picked Kristina Ortez, executive director of the Taos Land Trust.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham will now choose between Gonzales and Ortez, both Democrats, to fill the District 6 Senate seat that had been occupied by Cisneros since 1985.

Should she choose Gonzales, the Taos County Commission will be charged with nominating someone to fill his District 42 seat in the House of Representatives.

In the event of a vacancy in the state Legislature, the counties with parts of the legislative district nominate someone to fill the seat and the governor makes the final choice.

Gonzales, of Ranchos de Taos, has represented District 42 in the House since 1995.
