Police ID two recent homicide victims

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque Police Department released the names of two men killed in separate incidents in the city over the past two weeks.

Gilbert Gallegos, an APD spokesman, said Ryan Nelson, 34, was slain on Nov. 19 at an East Downtown motel and Jeffrey Stevens, 36, was found dead Nov. 28 in a West Side home. Neither case has been solved.

Officers responded to a fight around 10 p.m. at the Econo Lodge at 817 Central NE and found Nelson unconscious outside of a room. Paramedics were unable to revive him.

A woman called police around 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving and said she found Stevens, her nephew, lying in a pool of blood with a gun beside him. Rescue crews pronounced him dead at the scene.

The shooting initially sounded accidental, but a spokesman said police thought the incident appeared suspicious and opened a homicide investigation.
