Education Secretary: State High School Graduation Rate “Unacceptable”

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Only 54 percent of the state’s high school students graduate within four years, according to a study released by the state Public Education Department this afternoon.
The 54 percent “cohort graduation rate” is for the class of 2008. The national average was 70 percent.
“It is alarming,” said state Education Secretary Veronica Garcia.
This is the first time that the state releases a cohort graduation rate.
“As we can see the graduation rate is clearly unacceptable, and incremental gains will not be good enough…,” Garcia said. “I hope that the release of these statistics will be a call to take action from every corner of the state.”
