SANTA FE — Democrat Kristina Ortez of Taos announced plans this week to run for the House seat that will be vacated by the move of Rep. Roberto “Bobby” Gonzales over to the Senate.
Ortez, executive director of the Taos Land Trust, a nonprofit conservation group, was previously a candidate for the Senate. She and Gonzales, also a Democrat, were both nominated by county commissions in northern New Mexico to succeed Democratic Sen. Carlos Cisneros, who died of a heart attack in September.
But Gonzales ultimately won the appointment from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.
Ortez then entered the race for Gonzales’ old seat, House District 42.
“I believe we must do all we can to support our families, increase funding and resources for early childhood education, and address the behavioral health crises that deeply affects our community and State,” Ortez said in a written statement.
