Sports SpeakUp: Not enough answers for Lobo fan

I GUESS it wouldn’t be Lobo football or basketball season without the usual drama. This season some Lobo football players sat out several games for “personal reasons.” Two Lobo women’s basketball players quit the team with no explanation coming from anyone at UNM. Now we have two indefinitely suspended men’s basketball players with a lock-down on any information as to why. Enough for me. I won’t be attending anymore UNM athletic events until there are some answers as to what in the hell is going on here (and I’ll be taking some other fans with me, too).

PAUL WEIR’S presence at Austin Denton’s memorial service proves that he is genuinely committed to this community. Would we have seen Alford or Neal there? Doubtful, at best.

A BEAUTIFUL, sun drenched, perfect afternoon for football blessed the NM Bowl as a good, pre-holiday crowd looked on. It was great seeing Rocky and new Lobo gridiron coach Danny Gonzales patrolling the sidelines again. San Diego State won in a blowout, but that’s good exposure for our conference, right?

— George Scott

ANNOUNCED CROWD at the New Mexico Bowl was just over 18,000. There were more people in the Coronado Center parking lot. And on BOTH ART routes. That is an embarrassment. #ouch

15 GAMES into the season, and I still can’t believe rebounding isn’t one of the goals for the Lobo women’s basketball team. I consider it Basketball 101. That, and running an offense, not this constant one person driving them run back for defense. What is that?

— Lifelong Lobo Fan, Albuquerque

TO THIS day I am not sure how we let Rocky Long go. He perennially had us competitive, but apparently that wasn’t good enough for us. His parting shot to UNM was “the damn fans.” Now we have Danny Gonzales, a Rocky Long protégé, taking over. We must support him, not just through ticket sales, but fannies in seats.

— Bob, UNM Area

SAW THE NMSU versus Mississippi State game in men’s basketball. Congrats to McCants, Perry and the other New Mexico State Aggies. They beat a bigger team. Multiple MSU bigs fouled out.

— Larry the VOL

RICK WRIGHT, excellent article that UNM football has always been at its best when one third of the scholarship players are NM kids. From Joe Morison/Joe Lee Dunn’s 10-1 team to Rocky’s team that won at Missouri, BYU, and Arizona. Those coaches seemed to offer four to five NM kids a year.
