Robert Rubin to run for SF County treasurer

SANTA FE – Robert Rubin, 60, a former employee of the Santa Fe County Treasure’s Office and the state Property Tax Division, said Wednesday that he will run for county treasurer in the June Democratic primary.

Rubin has run for county treasurer twice before, in 2004 and 2008. Incumbent Treasurer Patrick Varela, in his second four-year term, is term-limited and can’t run for re-election.

Rubin said he worked in the treasurer’s office for about 9 years in the 1980s before joining the Property Tax Division. Post-retirement he was worked as a contractor for the division.

Rubin said his main goals as treasurer would be to clear up a growing backlog of delinquent tax bills and to push for state approval of a property tax exemption for homeowners over 65 years-old, similar to existing exemptions for heads of households and veterans that reduce the taxable value of a home.
