What a difference a year makes.
A year ago, the Cleveland boys basketball team was 10-0 before suffering a loss in Santa Fe. On Thursday evening, again off to a 10-0 start, the Storm hosted No. 7 Santa Fe and beat the Demons, 70-58, and are off to the best start in school history.
The Demons (10-3) led but once in the entire game, 7-6. The No. 2 Storm were in control, up 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and 33-26 at halftime.
In foul trouble and scoreless in the first half, Nathan Hasberry erupted for 12 of his 18 points in the third period, when teammate Tre Watson was the only other CHS player to score, adding six of his team-high 20.
With about 90 seconds left in the third period, the Storm went off on an impressive 18-2 run, enough of a pad to fend off a 14-0 run by the Demons, which got them within nine, 65-56, with 1:01 to go.
“I knew in the second half I had to come out stronger and stay focused,” Hasberry said.
