ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque police responded to a wreck Friday morning that appears to have been caused by occupants in two vehicles shooting at each other, according to a police spokesman.
There were injuries reported in the T-bone crash at Coors and Bluewater NW and one person was taken into custody, said Gilbert Gallegos, a police spokesman.
Darin Gonzales, 19, was driving one of the vehicles and was arrested for shooting at or from a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm, trafficking a controlled substance and tampering with evidence, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.
Police were originally called after receiving a report that people in two vehicles were shooting at each other at around 9 a.m. Preliminary information showed that when one of the cars traveled into the intersection, it was struck by another vehicle that was not involved in the shooting, Gallegos said.
A white truck and red SUV were badly damaged in the intersection on Coors north of Central.
Gallegos said one or two people were injured and police recovered guns and drugs from the scene.
The complaint says Gonzales left the scene after the wreck and tried to hide marijuana and other THC-based products as well as three firearms at a nearby home. Officers have been able to collect those items, and additional search warrants are pending, Gallegos said.
Witnesses told police that prior to the wreck, the occupants of a white truck and a black truck were shooting at each other, according to the complaint.
Police aren't aware of any shooting victims, Gallegos said.
