House tax panel now has co-chairmen

Rep. Javier Martinez, D-Albuquerque

SANTA FE — Democratic Rep. Javier Martinez of Albuquerque will help lead the House Taxation and Revenue Committee this session, serving as co-chairman of the panel alongside Jim Trujillo, a Santa Fe Democrat who plans to retire at the end of the year.

It’s unusual for a legislative committee to have two chairpersons, but the role may be a sign that Martinez is set to take over the panel himself next session.

Martinez and Trujillo were co-sponsors of the sweeping tax package that won approval in the final 15 minutes of the 2019 session.

Martinez also has led efforts — unsuccessful so far — to legalize recreational marijuana and to boost spending on early childhood programs by increasing distributions out of the Land Grant Permanent Fund.
