ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A woman is dead after being run over by an Albuquerque Rapid Transit bus Tuesday night near the University of New Mexico.

Daren DeAguero, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. at Central and Maple SE.

DeAguero said the woman, described as being in her 20s, was rolling around in the west bound lanes of Central, near Maple, when passerbys tried to help her.

“She gets up and she just rolls into the eastbound lane,” he said. “When she rolled, and the bus was coming at the same time, there was no way to avoid it.”

DeAguero said the bus ran over the woman and the driver immediately stopped to try to help the woman as some passengers left the area.

He said the roads will be shut down while police investigate.

Police vehicles and crime scene tape closed off both ends of Central as a body lay motionless behind an Albuquerque Rapid Transit bus, in the eastbound lanes of traffic.

Onlookers said a woman was trying to jump into people’s vehicles before she tried to jump on the bus as it was moving and was run over.

This is not the first crash ART has been in but the first with a pedestrian and the first that’s been fatal.

Since starting on Nov. 30 ART has been in at least 11 crashes with vehicles, including two APD officers.

At least two of those crashes resulted in the ART bus being sidelined for repairs. None resulted in serious injuries.
