Drive-by sent bullets flying into school, APD says

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A drive-by shooting sent bullets through the walls of a Southeast Albuquerque charter school as class was about to begin last week.

One of the bullets went into a classroom and hit a large video screen, which stopped it, according to an Albuquerque Police Department report. Another bullet went into a wall, through an office and stopped inside a water heater closet.

Nobody was injured or arrested in the incident.

School employees told officers that students who witnessed the incident didn’t speak with investigators because they “do not like police.”

According to the incident report:

On Friday, Feb. 21, officers were called around 11:20 a.m. to a shooting at Cesar Chavez Community School, near San Mateo and Gibson. Because of the gunfire, the school was already on lockdown when police arrived.

Surveillance video showed a Dodge Charger and a silver sedan driving by the school on Palomas SE before a shot was fired from the passenger side of the Charger.

“It appeared like the white Dodge Charger was shooting at the silver sedan,” an officer wrote.

Crime scene personnel found a bullet casing in the street, and a security guard said he was standing in the parking lot when gunfire erupted and heard rounds fly over his head.

A teacher told an officer a student saw the incident and might speak to them.

“The student apparently did not want to speak with me because the teacher never returned,” an officer wrote. “I was advised by school staff that the children in this school did not have good relationships with officers so they do not like police.”
