Former prison transport officer faces federal charges

A former prison transport officer is facing federal charges alleging he abused inmates in his care, including repeatedly tasing a detainee who was handcuffed, according to an indictment filed Wednesday.

Anthony Buntyn, 53, was working as a transport officer for a company used by jails and prisons throughout the country to move people who have been arrested on out-of-state warrants. In March 2017, he was leading a cross-country transport that stopped in New Mexico, the Department of Justice said in a news release sent out Thursday.

On March 26, 2017, while he was in Socorro County, Buntyn repeatedly tased a detainee who was handcuffed, according to the indictment. On that same day, he allegedly failed to safely transport four inmates in his van, causing each of them to suffer injuries. The indictment does not specify how those people were injured.

Buntyn is also accused of threatening to retaliate against the detainees if they reported any of his alleged crimes, according to the news release.

Buntyn is facing a total of three charges, which carry a combined sentence of up to 40 years, according to the DOJ.
