A shooting left a man dead in the parking lot of a Southeast Albuquerque gas station Tuesday evening.

Daren DeAguero, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said police responded to a shooting around 5:55 p.m outside the M&M gas station at Yale and Kathryn SE.

Arriving officers found a man shot in the parking lot and tried to render aid but he died at the scene. Sgt. Tanner Tixier, another APD spokesman, said the man appeared to have been shot in the torso.

He said detectives interviewed numerous people and a vehicle was secured and taken to the crime lab.

“At this time suspects have not been identified,” Tixier said Tuesday night. He added that the victim’s identity had not yet been verified.

A body could be seen beneath a sheet next to a white van as officers closed off the parking lot with crime scene tape. Crime scene vans and police vehicles clustered around the store as investigators talked in the adjacent dirt lot.

A woman sobbed at the edge of the taped-off site, watching from afar. She said the man’s name was Javier, a friend.

“He was like family to me,” the woman said, choking up.

The woman said an acquaintance heard gunshots at the gas station and came to find their friend dead in the parking lot.

A young man who lives nearby said he heard three or four gunshots and came to see what happened.

“Poor guy,” he said, watching the scene from across the street.
