Rams, Storm cagers earn All-District honors

The Cleveland High boys warm up before their semifinal loss to Capital the evening of March 12, when The Pit was closed to spectators.

We all wish high school basketball fans had had the opportunity to be in The Pit for state tournament action March 12-14, but the novel coronavirus precautions precluded that.

Nonetheless, it was a memorable season, and here are the city’s athletes gaining All-District recognition.

Tre Watson was named the District 1-5A Defensive Player of the Year and was also named to the All-District first team, along with his Cleveland High teammates Nate Hasberry, Aidan Moreno and Evan Gonzales.

The Storm’s Trey Ortega and Dorian Lewis received honorable mention.

Rio Rancho’s Isaiah Chavez, Junior Hodnett and Christian Lucero were All-District first-teamers, with Vance Rudolph earning honorable mention.

Atrisco Heritage Academy standout Joziah Ramos was the Player of the Year.

Cleveland placed three players on the girls All-District first team: Vanessa Rendon, Isabelle Valdez and Shawntae Salazar.

Jordan Barnard and Brenna Wolfe made the honorable-mention list.

Michaela Meyer was the lone Rio Rancho Ram earning first-team honors; Hannah Dietz and Kennedy Block earned honorable mention.

Volcano Vista’s Natalia Chavez was the Player of the Year; she led the Hawks to the championship game on March 14, when they lost to Hobbs.
