A POSSIBLE conversation this past Tuesday as a customer checked in at a local municipal golf course: “18 holes with a cart and a large bucket of balls, please.” Clerk behind the counter: “New Mexico State Police have been dispatched to this course. I’m getting out of here. You might want to do the same.”

I DON’T USUALLY thank people for doing their job, but these are extraordinary times: I tip my hat to the Journal sports staff for giving us a semblance of a sports section each day … not much out there to report, but you keep trying!

MANY THANKS to Geoff Grammer for memories of success by Lobo women’s basketball. Coach Don Flanagan’s Lobos played in the 2001 WNIT title game at the Pit. Hawaii, UAB, Arizona & Houston fell to UNM along the way. Ohio State nipped UNM 62-61 for the championship in front of 18,018, an all-time WNIT record. Flanagan’s teams were in postseason play (from)1998-2010. His legend started @ Eldorado HS: 401-13, 11 state championships, 9 undefeated seasons, and win streaks of 77, 74, 69, 66, & 60 games. The Geno Auriemma of girls’ HS ball! No wonder fans expect so much from the women’s program.
EL PESSIMIST: Good information on those excellent Roswell teams from the 1960s. But a slight correction. They won their state championships in 1963 and ‘64. Their attempt at a three-peat was thwarted by the Valley Vikings in 1965. There was a player on that ’65 Valley team named Larry Chavez. He’s significant some 55 years later because a few years ago he pledged $10 million to UNM athletics, including other lesser amounts to entities on the main campus. Most of the money is yet to come. Wouldn’t even you have to admit to some optimism here?
THAT NASCAR e-race would have been a whole lot more fun if Dale Jr. had landed an e-fist to Hamlin’s jaw in the pits after the race.
