3 Dashing Decades

The 30th annual Doggie Dash & Dawdle on Sunday brought thousands of people and dogs to Balloon Fiesta Park to run, walk, wag and otherwise enjoy a sunny day for Animal Humane New Mexico’s biggest fundraiser.

Thirty years ago, the event began with a little more than 100 people and about a dozen dogs, and was called “Run A-Stray, Help AHA” because the private nonprofit shelter at the time was known as Animal Humane Association of New Mexico.

Then, it was a 5-mile race; today’s it’s the shorter 5K, open to humans with or without a dog, and today’s Doggie Dash also offers the 2K Dawdle, a pleasant pet plus person walk. Go to to see how events and donations benefit our companion animals.
