County Commission OKs property purchases

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Bernalillo County Commission last month approved the purchase of two adjacent properties in the Southeast Heights at a total cost of $440,865.

The money will come from the county’s general fund for the purpose of “land-banking properties for future affordable housing needs, including scattered site housing,” according to county documents.

One of the properties is at 517 Cardenas SE. It sits on 0.16 acres and contains a 1,379-square-foot building with four rental units. It was built in 1955.

The other parcel, at 521 Cardenas SE, also sits on 0.16 acres. It contains a 1,173-square-foot, single-family home with a detached garage. That home was built in the 1950s, the documents say.

The purchase price for the home at 517 Cardenas SE was listed as $165,000, and the one at 521 Cardenas SE had a purchase price of $115,500.

The remainder of the money approved by the county is to cover closing costs, renovation costs or demolition costs, if necessary, Commissioner Debbie O’Malley said.

The sites were deemed desirable because both are located within walking distance of the county’s Comprehensive Assessment and Resiliency Through Excellence campus, or CARE, medical and addiction service providers, public transportation, shopping and the under-construction Tiny Homes Village, whose residents may require affordable long-term housing after they leave the village, O’Malley said.
