Titan Development is planning a 158-unit apartment project at Journal Center, the organization confirmed Thursday.

The project, Journal Center Lofts, is planned for a 6.5-acre lot at 7800 Headline NE, between Cabela’s and Jefferson, according to city records.

“With 158 units, the project will bring 200 to 250 people … to transform the Journal Center into live-work-play,” Titan’s director of development, Josh Rogers, wrote in a statement. “The urban style of this project focuses on walkability and easy access to nearby amenities. Bringing urban housing to a suburban office park is incredibly exciting for the Journal Center and the City of Albuquerque.”

Titan partner Kurt Browning wrote that the development will be the first multifamily project at Journal Center.

“Over the last 35 years, Journal Center has become one of the premier office parks in Albuquerque,” Browning wrote. “In the past five years it has grown from a traditional business park to a live-work-play district that includes large employers, restaurants, retail and housing.”

Journal Center Corp. President and CEO Lowell Hare, whose organization is a partner in the project, said the parcel of land has been eyed for a residential project for more than a decade.

“Most high-quality suburban office parks like Journal Office Center have a residential element,” Hare said. “More and more people want the opportunity to live much closer to where they work … and to get services that they can walk to, and ride their bike to work.”

Hare said he believes the apartments will be highly sought-after and may spur further retail development around Cabela’s.

“It’s going to be a great new amenity to the entire park,” he said.

Journal Center Corp. and Journal Publishing Co. are both subsidiaries of Journal Enterprises Inc.
