Sports Speak Up! On Lobo hoops newcomer Francis and UNM football coaching contracts

GOOD GRIEF, Charlie Brown! Why does UNM —or any program — need 14 assistant football coaches?

— The Oldest Professor

WHERE IS UNM’S NEW PRESIDENT? She approved axing several wonderful sports programs because of finances, then approves 15 people to receive between themselves over $2 million to run our football program. A coach and 4-5 assistants could run the team well; but Gonzales signs them, Nuñez approves, and the President and Regents look the other way. Priorities?

PEOPLE GETTING sick by hundreds and dying every day and golfers complaining about not getting a beer at course and one group jumping ahead of another… unbelievable!

JEREMIAH FRANCIS is leaving Blue Heaven and coming to play in Loboland. Very exciting! He is a very good 4-star PG who was probably going to be buried on the bench as the Tar Heels are bringing in Caleb Love, a 5-star recruit to play PG, along with another highly touted do-it-all combo G, R.J. Davis. … UNC and Carolina’s loss is most definitely UNM’s gain as Roy Williams does not recruit the type of transfer that UNM had last season. I predict no jail time for Francis.

SO JEREMIAH FRANCIS is going from Carolina blue to cherry and silver? How about going from Hall Of Fame Coach Roy Williams to ” I don’t know how to coach him, I don’t know if I want to coach him” Paul Weir. Good luck with that.

IN APRIL 1977, our foursome gathered at Arroyo del Oso for a weekday round of golf. The co-head pro, Guy Wimberly, asked if we would take a fifth, somebody named Ernie. Why not. Guy had left for the day by the time we came off the 18th green but Ernie said he would buy us pizza and beer so we ended up down the road at the then Hog’s Breath Saloon. Wives and girlfriends were called. Our round of golf ended at midnight. A $100 bill from Ernest Borgnine covered everything. Thanks, Guy Wimberly, for a lifetime memory.
