Despite a spring semester thrown into a pandemic flux of leaving campus and Albuquerque for many students to finish classes online, the University of New Mexico athletic department on Friday announced a record-setting grade point average for the 2019-20 academic year.
The department’s overall GPA was 3.55 with Lobo women’s athletes posting a 3.74 GPA and the men a 3.34.
Eight programs set new program records and all 14 programs had at least a 3.0 GPA, the first time that has happened at UNM. Of UNM’s 393 student athletes, 296 had a 3.0 or better and 99 had a 4.0.
After COVID-19 restrictions changed the way UNM completed the spring semester, students were given an option of utilizing a pass/fail. UNM Athletics did not specify how many athletes did so.
Women’s golf posted a 4.01 GPA in the spring, tied for the highest mark for any team in UNM history. Men’s tennis posted a record 3.97 GPA in the spring, the highest for any men’s program in a semester at UNM.
The highest profile sports of football (3.10) and men’s basketball (3.17), though below the department-wide average, each posted program record GPAs for a semester.
