Sports Speak Up! Call vaunted UNM arena ‘Money Pit’

RECENT NEWS suggests that UNM’s basketball facility may soon be in for a name change. It has evolved from the $1.4M University Arena (AKA “The Pit”) to the $60M “Dreamstyle Arena.” My suggestion is to rename it “The Money Pit” which is more descriptive of the facility and, more generally, UNM’s athletic program.—Steve, Paradise Hills

CALL IT what it is, The Pit. Money Pit. Or the “what used to be” arena.— Manny G. from the Hub City

A WISE GUY & Dreamstyle can’t deliver revenue on the World Famous Pit! The Problem: Learfield/IMG & UNM Athletics! Simple Fix! Execute an exclusive RFP with national soft drink companies Pepsi & Coke for $500,000 annually. The company who wins the RFP bid must bring to the deal five of their national major food clients at $100,000 each annually, there’s your annual million dollar guarantee. … Simple Math my friends!  Go Big or Don’t Go! — The Grizz

UNM FOOTBALL players might not get a chance to kneel again in front of the American flag for two reasons: 1.) The football team is in the locker room for the playing of the national anthem. 2.) There might not be a season at all with COVID-19 in-play. However, the economy is probably not going to shut down again, so just as during the Spanish flu pandemic over a century ago that took 675K U.S. lives and at least 50M worldwide — with masks, Americans will likely carry on. One might call it “survival of the luckiest.”— Joseph
